There are many organizations in Chicago that significantly contribute to water related initiatives. Their efforts help advance the targets of Sustainable Development Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation. Below are just a few that are making a big impact.

Friends of the Chicago River

Friends of the Chicago River is dedicated to the health and vitality of the 156-mile Chicago-Calumet river system. Their goal to transform the river into a healthy, climate-resilient ecosystem with equitable access for all communities. They achieve this through education, outreach, on-the-ground restoration projects, and policy and planning advocacy. In addition to donating, there are also opportunities to volunteer for river cleanups.

Current

Current is a Chicago-based nonprofit that drives innovation in water technology and management in the Great Lakes Region. It connects utilities, researchers, startups, and government agencies to work on new solutions for cleaner, safer, and more resilient water systems.

Alliance for the Great Lakes

The Alliance for the Great Lakes is based in Chicago but is active throughout the entire Great Lakes region. Their mission is to protect, conserve, and restore the lakes to ensure healthy water for the communities that rely on them. They address issues such as plastic pollution, agricultural runoff, aging water infrastructure, and climate impacts on the lakes. In addition to donating, there are also opportunities to volunteer for beach cleanups.
